5 Tips for Moving in Little Rock When You're a Retiree
Most of us anticipate happiness in being retired. After a lifetime of working hard, we can finally kick our feet up, relax, and enjoy the rewards of our labors. Some find that when they attain senior citizen age that they now need to move. Maybe it is because they no longer need the room in their Little Rock home with their children now adults and moved out, perhaps it's because they find themselves living on a fixed income, or maybe they just want to finally settle down in that warmer climate they've always dreamt about. Whatever your reason for moving when you attain retiree status, it's important to give the task some careful consideration.
Tip #1: Think About Moving in the Fall or Winter
One of the great benefits of being a senior citizen is that you’re no longer obligated to keep the same schedule restrictions as people who have to work. You choose to go to the supermarket on a Thursday afternoon? You can because, you are in control of your schedule. Want to take in a movie matinee when everyone else has to work? Enjoy the motion picture! And if you choose to move, then you could do so off-season, when demand and prices are both at their lowest.
Summer is the busiest time for moving for a lot of reasons (good weather, the kids are done with school, etc.), and hence is is also the most expensive season to move. A few months one way or the other can save you lots of money.
Tip #2: If You Don't Need It, Don't Move It
The longer you live in a house, the more stuff you pick up. Everything, from sweaters you haven't worn in a decade, to papers from a job you barely remember, fills in the crevices in your home. So, before your move, start paring down. A good rule of thumb is to ask whether you have used the item in the last several years. If not, you surely don't need it. So, sell it, donate it, give it away to whoever will take it off your hands, but if you don't need it, don't move it.
Tip #3: Make a Plan
Moving is something that requires planning, not last minute, especially as retireed. You need to take your time, do your analysis, and make sure you have everything shipshape. You need to know where you're moving to, how you are planning on getting there, if you need to hire a professional Little Rock mover, when you're going to go, and last but not least, you need to have the costs figured out to the penney. And, just to be extra cautious, you should have a different game plan in place, just in case something falls through, or doesn't happen the way you want or need it to.
Tip #4: Be Prepared
Planning is when you get your goals down on paper; preparation is when you start warming up. When you start preparing for a move, you whittle down your possessions, saving cash for the moving expenses, deciding when to list your house, etc. Preparation is key.
Tip #5: Slow Down
Moving should not be done in a rush. Decisions need to be weighed carefully, and you should have all the information on-hand before deciding on anything. Not only that, but you should make time to prepare and to take care of any loose ends that need to be resolved before you say goodbye and head off toward your destination. There isn’t any reason to rush, so go at a pace you're comfortable with.
